To the Bahamas!

AK cruised the length of the fireplace today! First time!

And I forgot to report that she properly drank out of her sippy cup the other day. By "properly" I mean she swallowed, holding the cup on her own. She, obviously, still plays with the cup, chews on the spout, throws it everywhere, and bathes in the water, but she swallowed which was different from her usual "lick the spout."

The internal valve didn't work for her; she couldn't ever figure out that she could suck from the cup like the bottle. Perhaps because I offered her water from a glass a long time ago. Who knows....Probably better to just skip that step....until she discovers cranberry juice. Ha ha!

Book Smart

Last night, we read Kate Tom's "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star" before bed. Of course, we read up to as many as 7 stories a night, but this is one of my personal favorites that was given to us by the church choir. Almost each page has a sparkly, bright blue, raised-texture star of different sizes on it.

Prior to two days ago, in all her textured books, I manually took her hand and rubbed it over the objects in the book. Then, all of a sudden on Thursday, she started pulling the "duck" hairs off the books!

All this to say that---last night she reached up voluntarily and scratched a few of the stars in "Twinkle." Seeing that she seemed to understand "star," I then asked her, "Where is the star?" She found all the stars larger than my pinkie nail! (The smaller ones are still a challenge) I don't think it was coincidence.

So today, I quizzed her again. We have a "Colors" book that the Ws gave us. She loves it; chews it to pieces almost and we read it often and take it with us on trips. It goes something like this:

Yellow features a soft duck and lion
Green features a bumpy frog and I forget, something else green...
Red features a furry bird and a cat
ETC...
Duck and frog are on the left hand pages; cat is on the right and it is flat.

I posed this question on each of these three pages: "AK, which one is the duck/cat/frog?" She put her hands on the duck right away.

For the cat, she looked left, right, left and then put her hands on the cat on the right!

For the frog, she studied it very, very carefully, again looking left and right, left and right, then she stared left for a while, did not use her hands, but looked at me as to ask "Is that right?" I, of course, smiled, patted her and said "Yes, frog!"

So, one might think....coincidence. But no!

After lunch, I said to J, ask her the questions. This time she did almost the same thing, except when she got to frog, she used her hands because she knew it. (It still took her the longest) What a serious, studious child she is!

Makes a lot of sense, we have a lot more books and animals that are ducks and cats, than frogs!

Cool, huh?

"The Sound of Silence"

Thank you Simon and Garfunkel.

One of my friends recently emailed me and asked what life was like with a crawler. I've been so exhausted I haven't even replied (sorry EMS), but I suppose the title sums it up. When you (finally) hear it, you know she's gotten into something.

Actually, a 7 month crawler (slower?) is probably nothing like a 10 month crawler (faster?). (Of course, I wouldn't know yet) But, a 7 month crawler is a bit of a relief for the parents because the simple act of crawling and discovering is such an amusement that the parents are no longer on tap for being the only entertainment! And she doesn't really get into things, though she chews shoes, if we're not watching...(A lot of AK reminds me of a cat....a lot....the nickname pre-birth "A Kat" is very appropriate)

Her favorite house toy is the door spring. It's also great because you can hear it reverberate anywhere in the house.

Here are two other pictures of our future cruiser, not PT, but AK:

This last one is from today and boy, is she proud!

I'm thinking about a future blog post called "AK's possible careers..." Stay tuned.

Picnic in the Park

Argh. Today I forgot my camera on an "AK first." We had a picnic at a local park and put her in a baby swing. It was so cute. Picture her in her hat and shades, arms hanging out of the side, just chilling. Adorable.

She had a long day today...spent the morning at church in the nursery. (J had to fly and I had to play) The other day I made my first baby food...a pureed banana half. That did some interesting things inside. I'll leave it at that.

She loves food. We've been joking that if you put anything on the spoon, she'll eat it. Well, today I was reassured that she does indeed have preferences. We've worked our way through Stage One foods (forget the prunes; we really don't need those), except for meats. So today we tried chicken. With our usual excitement, happy faces, and some clucking thrown in as explanation, the first few bites were tolerated, but with increasing levels of frown. Finally, after about the 6th taste, she made a choking sound and gently spit it all out. I said to J, "Well, they say it sometimes takes 8 tries for a new food."

Later, at dinner, we gave her some more and while it was still no peach, pear, or banana, she politely ate what was in the dish.

J cannot understand how anyone can't like chicken.

I find both of them hilarious! :)

Good ears

This is a snapshot of AK with her music toy. In the middle is a "book" where you can flip the page and the sounds change from "educational" (ABCs, numbers, colors) to "jazzy tunes." All of a sudden, she prefers the ABC page and when we flip the page, she notices right away that her ABC song is gone and she flips it back! We've done this several times, so it is no coincidence either! Smart baby!

She has also been practicing getting to her feet on this toy. Fortunately, it eventually will have legs attached, so she'll be able to play it standing up. All this week, she has been pushing up on it. Well, this morning, J reports that he found her standing in her crib, hands on the rail. Yikes! Time to lower the crib to its lowest level. "Standing" is considered an "advanced" skill at 7 months! She's also good at vowels....we are working hard on consonants....no dada, baba or mama yet! (She's much too busy trying to get around town)

Grandpa's Visit

My dad has been here visiting a few days. Here are a few (of the yes, 80) precious pictures:
