Mott Tot's First Vacation

Whew. What a few weeks it's been. Where to start?

Well, the three of us took our first week-long vacation together. That's together as three, and also together as two. J and I had never been anywhere for a whole week. It was fabulous. We rented a 2 bedroom cottage in South Haven, Michigan, complete with kitchen, stove, dishes, etc. (Every few days we traveled back to the dark ages and sterilized our bottles in boiling water. Not so bad and faster than any dishwasher!)

Instead of posting every (yes, the usual 82...) pictures, I will narrate some of the funny highlights and then post pictures in a separate blog:

My child has never been so dirty as in this cottage. It was quite clean, except for the floor. We cringed left and right, but always made sure to wash her hands (and sometimes feet) before going anywhere. We have quickly gotten over the "Oh, no, germs!" but we try to kill 'em when we can. Anna found the door springs right away. Pure instantaneous amusement. Love it! Her other favorite place, both at home and the cottage, is under the table or crawling through and over chairs.

We think she enjoyed her first day at the beach. All but the water. I didn't know if she was scared or what, but I think it was the temperature. Too cold on her princess feet. ;) The rest of the days, we took morning walks before her nap and J heroically carried her in the pack. (It helped when he noticed girls looking at him and smiling! HA!) Other times we took Anna to the park and put her in the baby swings.

The yard had one of those sack throw things...I don't know what they are called. You throw the beanbag into the holes....J and I did that some evenings when she was asleep inside, one evening while she was asleep in the yard in her carseat, and another time I put her on the beach towels and let her crawl in the grass!

Eating, of course, is a major event these days. Not even part of this subject, we can't seem to keep up with her food intake. She eats like a horse, hippo and elephant all in one! One afternoon, we went to Crane's Pie Pantry for an afternoon snack around AKs feeding time. They had some great old highchairs. I've never had to eat pie so fast. It was so good that we went back the next night for dinner. Enter my new best friend: The Cheerio. Yes, I can already hear my mother saying, "Of course. I took those everywhere." Well, since AK hit 8 months it's an allowable food, so on this trip I brought a little container. Oh my gosh! Too bad you can't give them to teeny tiny infants! New mothers (EMS!): Cheerios are a lifesaver. Like the doorspring, instant entertainment. After about a week or so of practice, she self-fed herself several Cheerios yesterday for the first time! Yeah! The Cheerios usually win, but she gets enough in her mouth to keep her happy. :) We also managed to have one nice dinner out...at 4:30pm....and with a little persuasion the cooks agreed to make our meal (usually not 'till 5pm)...We sat outside (we've learned to steer clear of any humans) and she behaved quite well. Occasionally she practiced her outbursts, which lately are a combination of a lion's roar and a balloon losing air, and I quietly said "Inside voice AK and modeled the boychoir ooo." This seemed to work and we were really impressed with her behaviour!

All in all, the vacation was better than expected. I had no idea we would have such a good time with an infant. Really lots of fun. And for those of you wondering about my sleep, I did finally get up to 5.5 hours near the end of the trip. YEAH!
